Free Economics Workshop Gives San Diego Students Leg Up in Down Economy

New York, New York (PRWEB) October 18, 2008 -- In conjunction with the Cuyamaca College Center for Economic Education (http://www.econedsandiego.org), the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE, www.ncee.net) will conduct a free workshop for select San Diego County K-12 teachers on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008.

With the financial turmoil taking center stage, teachers will discover ways to teach their students about the current crisis, and explain how students can prosper in both good times and bad.

"These are definitely troubling financial times for adults, so imagine how high school students must feel as they prepare to enter the workforce or plan for college," says Troy D. White, NCEE's Director of Product Marketing and Sales. "San Diego County teachers will find out how to teach K-12 students to take control of their credit, build a nest egg, and manage their money. Students will leave their classrooms with the confidence to make wise financial decisions."

Teachers will use a mix of multimedia and print resources that help them teach crucial economic and personal finance content to their students. Hosted in a computer training lab at Cuyamaca College, teachers will put the power of technology to work in two ways:

1. Taking Advantage of Teachable Moments -- Using NCEE resources such as EconEdLink.org, teachers will research and find lesson plans that help them teach about the current financial crisis.

2. Creating Modules -- Teachers will use a timely topic, credit, to put together a teaching unit that includes print lesson plans, multimedia clips and computer-based activities for students.

Resources covered by the teachers include:

* Virtual Economics (http://store.ncee.net/virtualeconomics.html) -- a CD-ROM with a database of over 1,250 lesson plans

* Financial Fitness for Life (http://fffl.ncee.net/) -- a personal finance program for K-12 students

* EconEdLink (http://econedlink.org) -- online economic and personal finance lesson plans for K-12 teachers and their students

About the Workshop

The workshop will take place at Cuyamaca College, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in El Cajon, CA, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Space is limited to 35 participants, and teachers can RSVP to Anthony Zambelli at anthony.zambelli@gcccd.edu or call 619-660-4318.
